New York Trip

April 11, 2011
Bridal Market NYC

New York is not “My kind of town” but it is a necessary part of my life if I continue to carry couture wedding gowns…..and of course I always will!

However through the many years I have traveled here on buying trips, I have sort of developed a routine of my favorite spots once I’m here and sometimes people are interested to know of them.

Hotels: Waldorf-Astoria (I actually remodeled our bathroom at home to look like the ones there. Black and white marble floor and the thickest white towels you could buy.) InterContinental (where I am tonight! However our’s in KC is nicer. And the cocktails aren’t $15.00!).Times Square Hilton (fabulous cocktail lounge and it’s so relaxing!)

Restaurants: Redeye Grill (across the street from Carnegie Hall and I always have a celebrity sighting…crisp linens, good sea-food)

Isabella’s (near Central Park West)…love eating on the sidewalk in all seasons there. Moderately priced and such nice, nice waiters.

Café Metro (several of them. Quick, delicious salads. Love the Moroccan one.)

Shopping: Bloomingdales (always find wonderful neckties on sale here. Bought a lilac Valentino tie today that I’ll wear a bunch.)

Macy’s…the original and this week, the home of the Flower Show. Google THAT!

Saks Fifth Avenue…again the original. I love the way all the men wear black suits, white shirts and dark ties. This is also where I buy my Jo Malone.)

Churches: Holy Innocents in the garment district. It’s such a quiet reprieve to the day’s craziness on the sidewalks.

Bridal Market NYC (continued)

More shopping, more shopping!

I’m excited about two new lines we will be carrying: Monet Couture jewelry (wait until you see it! and Marchesa wedding gowns…think Sandra Bullock at Oscars and put that into a bridal gown.

 One of the New Marchesa's!

The Monet jewelry will debut with an ad in Martha Stewart showcasing what I think is the most beautiful necklace I have ever seen! Take a look! And it’s only $360.00???

In addition, I loaded up our always “empty again” jewelry cases in both stores with many other pieces from my favorite tucked-away spots. I frequent three of those sources so often that the owners all know me by sight….in NEW YORK! (That’s blowing a lot of their product out our front door!)

In other bridal news: the Lilly Pulitzer dresses are rivaled only by the David Meister’s in terms of being unique and quality, quality, quality. I could have bought every single one.
I love the Lilly’s that have the pastel linings. And the Meister’s are the perfect blend of sexy and still classic.

Can’t wait for tomorrow. Yet more shopping and now a bigger store in which to display them at Hawthorne Plaza. Today Tip Top Tux enjoyed the first day of being “officially open.”  The faux finishers are working feverishly on my walls to get us back to normal ASAP. (I can’t believe I’m really out of town during all this chaos!)

April 12

Headed home! Exhausted on this 9:30 p.m. flight.
Thank heaven for a waiting car as I don’t have the tread left on my shoes to walk to find my own at midnight.  I always have a driver from Overland Limo waiting for me. It’s a perk that really makes the drive to the house a chance to decompress and check my e-mails before integrating back into the family…and life with bichons!

The market today was highlighted today by bumping into old friends, former employees who have stayed in the biz and visiting showrooms. One of my Possible Pick-ups is the collection of Eve of Milady. I haven’t carried her things in years but man are they beautiful…expensive but worth it.  Eve and I had a great time catching up and she is anxious to have her gowns in Kansas City. I think I might be too.
